Macomb County recently issued the following announcement on Oct. 4

Nearly 2,400 students from 28 local high schools today boarded buses and visited one of 60 host sites taking part in Macomb County’s Manufacturing Day. The annual event, which is coordinated by Macomb County Planning and Economic Development and the Macomb Intermediate School District (MISD), provides opportunities for students to tour area advanced manufacturing facilities and meet people who make things.

"I look forward to this day every year," said County Executive Mark A. Hackel. "Let's face it, it is kind of a privilege to be able to tour these amazing places and get a behind-the-scenes look at what makes manufacturing such an interesting industry. My favorite part is witnessing the interaction between the employers and the students. You can see the enthusiasm for the work they do is contagious.”

Hackel joined Dakota High School in Macomb Township during a tour of Triumph Geared and Mechanical Solutions - Macomb, which is part of an international organization serving the aerospace industry through the design, engineering, manufacturing, repairing and overhauling of a broad portfolio of aircraft structures, components, accessories, subassemblies and systems. Students on the tour saw engineers turning a customer blueprint into a machinable product - the transformation of raw material into finished goods. (Photos of the tour available here.)

“Triumph Geared and Mechanical Solutions – Macomb has participated in our local Manufacturing Day since its inception,” said David Chisholm, director, Triumph Operating System. “We recognize the value of introducing students to the multitude of career possibilities in our fast-paced, technically advanced manufacturing environment. Our employees take great pride in showcasing our knowledge and products to the next generation of machinists, engineers and support personnel.”

All students participating in Manufacturing Day received a 90-120 minute guided tour and some combination of the following:

  • Overview of the employer by company leadership, who provide information about what they do, who they hire and opportunities for career growth that they offer
  • Smaller sub-tours that highlight different work areas and careers  Opportunities for students to talk with employees and see the product life cycle in action
  • Opportunities for students to see and touch the machinery, tools and products that are a part of the industrial workplace
These experiences help the students better understand what a career in advanced manufacturing might look like. The tours also provided benefits for the host sites in that they get the chance to promote their companies and interact with the next generation of talent. Several participating companies have even hired previous Manufacturing Day attendees that were interested in the field. “We are proud to partner with our 21 local school districts, the Macomb County Executive’s Office and businesses throughout Macomb County to provide real-world learning experiences for our students,” said Michael DeVault, superintendent of the MISD. “We are extremely grateful for our business leaders and their commitment to our students. Macomb County’s business community has a great reputation for supporting education and helping to grow the economy.” Since 2014, more than 12,000 students have participated in Macomb County’s Manufacturing Day through the support of an active planning committee and the generosity of host sites and sponsors.
