CITY OF DEARBORN: Messages from Mayor O’Reilly regarding COVID-19

Covid 19 message from mayor

City of Dearborn recently issued the following announcement.

Today, Governor Whitmer issued a statewide shelter-in-place order similar to the ones that other cities across the country have been putting into action this week.  These orders are intended to protect all Michigan residents by slowing the transmission of the COVID-19 virus and by helping our hospitals and caregivers not become overwhelmed.

We believe that the Governor's order is an appropriate next step in this battle and is consistent with the actions we have taken in Dearborn.  We urge all residents to comply with the restrictions in the State's order to help minimize risk.  These actions will allow residents to take care of themselves and their loved ones and will help essential businesses and services to function.

Violating the executive order, which ends April 13, is punishable by a misdemeanor, $500 fine and up to 90 days in jail. Anyone can report violations to the Michigan Attorney General's consumer complaint hotline at (877) 765-8388 or online at www.michigan.gov/agcomplaints.

We will continue to provide resources to answer the community's questions about how this order impacts their lives and what it means for the safety of our entire community and region.  We will also continue to provide essential services in the safest way possible so that residents can focus on keeping themselves and their families safe. The City of Dearborn’s website, cityofdearborn.org, and our social media accounts are updated regularly with new information important for our residents and their families.

We have the power to influence the outcome of this life-threatening challenge. That power comes from our ability to work as one for the benefit of all.  We have done this in the past and we can do it today. By acting responsibly we will get through this crisis.

Statement from Mayor O'Reilly regarding the City's response to COVID-19

As your Mayor, I want to assure you that we’ve been monitoring the ever-changing news about the spread of COVID-19 in our city and state, and making decisions we believe to be in the best interest of our community and those we serve.

These are unprecedented times and the information about COVID-19 and its progression changes by the hour. Despite the anxiety and frustration this causes, we must continue to remain calm and make smart decisions informed by credible sources like the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The one constant message is that we all must play a role in slowing the transmission of this virus.

The City has been proactive in pursuing that goal through small, as well as, unprecedented measures such as closing facilities to the public for the time being and creating a dedicated webpage at www.cityofdearborn.org/covid19. These measures will help protect the safety and well-being of our community, employees and visitors. We ask for your patience and understanding as you deal with any inconveniences this may cause.

I would like to recognize the dedicated employees of the City of Dearborn, especially those who are working to provide services to the community while most of the city and our businesses are closed to the public. They are showing their true commitment to public service and it is greatly appreciated.

While we don’t know the ultimate impact COVID-19 will have on our community, we do know that we have weathered circumstances beyond our control in the past and have come out of those experiences stronger and more united. I’m confident that this event will be no different and, in time, life as we know it will return to normal. Until then, I will continue to make every effort to keep us as safe as possible and rely on you to do the same.

Take care, stay healthy, but most of all, protect and care for the ones you love and your neighbors.
