Charter County of Wayne Michigan issued the following announcement on July 18.
"Our nation has lost a civil rights champion. John Lewis was an apostle of nonviolence who often was found leading the bloody campaign to end Jim Crow laws. Often bloodied himself on the front lines of the civil rights movement, he rose up against indignities of second-class citizenship and was the last surviving speaker from the historic 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.
“Sporting an unwavering principle and penetrating purpose, John Lewis’ was instrumental in laying the foundation for the fight for equality which continues to move forward.
“He will be missed deeply but his spirit, as we all see today, shines brightly.”
