Charter County of Wayne Michigan issued the following announcement on Sept. 3.

Wayne County Commission Chair Alisha Bell has issued the following statement on Wednesday’s death of Wayne County Deputy Sheriff Bryant Searcy at the hands of a county jail inmate:

“Our hearts go out to Corporal Searcy’s family and to all members of the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department at this tragic time.

“This horrific event reminds us again of the challenges of law enforcement officers face, and the sacrifices they make, in protecting us all. I have asked the Commission’s Public Safety, Judiciary and Homeland Security Committee to conduct a full discussion with the sheriff’s department regarding this tragic incident to prevent a tragedy like this from ever happening again.”

That committee meeting is expected to occur Wednesday, Sept. 9, at noon via Zoom.

Wayne County Commissioners held a moment of silence for Corporal Searcy during Thursday’s full commission meeting.

Corporal Searcy was slain after a struggle with an inmate at the county’s Division 2 jail on Clinton Street in Detroit.
