City of Dearborn recently issued the following announcement.
In anticipation of the upcoming collection of loose leaves raked into the street, enforcement of parking restrictions on Public Service Days will resume on Monday, Oct. 5.
Public Service Days require that residents remove their parked vehicle from the street from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. to allow curb-to-curb services, including loose leaf collection. Public Services Days correspond to a neighborhood’s trash day.
Parking restrictions had been suspended on Public Service Days since April in response to conditions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, but will start again the week of Oct. 5.
Loose leaf collection will begin on Public Service Days during the week of Oct. 26. To ensure that City crews can carry out a safe and efficient collection operation, parked vehicles need to be off the street during a neighborhood’s Public Service Day.
To give residents time to adjust to the reinstatement of parking restrictions, police will issue warnings to those in violation during the week of Oct. 5.
Beginning the week of Oct. 12, tickets will be given to those in violation of the parking restrictions.
Public Service Days usually span from March to December, but were suspended in April 2020 because COVID-19 restrictions meant many people were at home instead of at work or school and found it difficult to move their parked vehicles off of the street during the day.
However, many COVID-19 restrictions have been relaxed since then. And to ensure that residents enjoy the full benefits of the popular loose leaf collection program, Public Service Days are being reinstated at least for the duration of operation, which lasts until the week of Nov. 30-Dec. 4.
“We know residents expect the loose leaf collection program to be robust. We can only deliver on that expectation if parked cars are off the street, and so resuming Public Service Days now makes sense,” said Mayor Jack O’Reilly. “We’re easing into the program, and will give plenty of reminders before tickets are issued on Oct. 12.”
The fine for an initial violation of Public Service Day parking rules is $15 (or $7 if paid within three days). The second violation in a calendar year will result in a $30 fine; and the third violation is $70. If a fourth violation occurs within a calendar year, the vehicle will be towed at the owner’s expense.
Tickets will also be issued to vehicles parked across sidewalks, on the easement or on lawns.
