Leading up to the Supreme Court hearings to replace the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Democrats have been trying to discredit Judge Amy Coney Barrett, according to the Michigan Republicans website.
As part of the attempt to discredit the judge, Sen. Corey Booker (D-NJ) asked Barrett if she condemned white supremacy.
"[Booker] condescendingly asked Judge Barrett, a mother of two Black children, if she condemned white supremacy, to which she of course answered yes," Michigan Republicans said on its website. "In the same hearing, Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-HI) asked Judge Barrett if she had sexually assaulted anyone, to which she answered, unequivocally, no."
One of the senators questioned whether her two Black children, who are adopted from Haiti, are being used props in her life, USA Today reported.
"The implication is that you're a racist. And that you use your two children as props," Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) said during the hearing, USA Today reported. "Do you use your children as props?"
Barrett said she considered the pros and cons of seeking the nomination on her personal life and knew she and her family would be the target of hurtful comments.
"My husband and I had to really weigh the costs of these deeply offensive and hurtful things that are not only hurtful to me, but are hurtful to my children, who are my children, who we love, and who we brought home and made part of our family," she said during the hearing, USA Today reported. "Accusations like that are cruel."
“The insulting questions that the Senate Democrats asked Judge Barrett show how little respect they have, not just for Judge Barrett, but the confirmation process as a whole,” Michigan Republican Party Chairman Laura Cox said, according to the Michigan Republicans website. “Judge Barrett has shown her immense qualifications and her patience during these hearings, and there is no doubt that she should sit on the Supreme Court of the United States.”
