Charter County of Wayne Michigan issued the following announcement on Nov. 19.
A discussion on solid waste issues in Wayne County, from the type of materials stored in the county to proposed changes to state landfill laws, is set for 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 24 before the county commission’s Committee on Health and Human Services on Zoom.
“We will get a report on how many landfills are in Wayne County, what kind of waste they can receive (some receive toxic waste), as well as what proposed changes to the Michigan law regarding solid waste that are currently proposed in Lansing,” committee Chair Tim Killeen (D-Detroit) said.
The meeting will feature a report from Pat Cullen, director of the county’s Solid Waste Technical Division. The division inspects all county solid waste facilities, including landfills and processing plants. Representatives from Wayne County’s state House delegation are also expected to take part.
The county commission in recent months has drafted resolutions opposing the transport and storage of additional levels of toxic waste in county landfills as well as the transport of hazardous waste by truck across the Ambassador Bridge, which connects the U.S. and Canada.
Members of the public are encouraged to participate in the meeting at https://zoom.us/j/2112321934 or by dialing (312) 626-6799. A video recording of the meeting will be posted on the commission YouTube page as well as on the Health and Human Services section of the county website, www.waynecounty.com. Additional information on the meeting is available by calling Commissioner Killeen’s office at (313) 224-0920.
