Book Discussion Group for Adults. Meets on the Second Wednesday of the month in the Staff Lounge. This month's Book Selection is The Great Michigan Read: The Women of the Copper Country, by Mary Doria Russell Mary Doria Russell’s novel The Women of the Copper Country is a fictionalized history of the 1913 copper miners’ strike in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Following the story of 25-year-old strike leader, Anna “Big Annie” Klobuchar Clemenc, Russell draws our attention to the women and immigrants who risked their lives to fight unregulated capitalist exploitation. Though copper mining in the early 20th-century may seem distant and removed from our experiences, Michigan Humanities hopes that the resources provided by the Great Michigan Read will help readers to understand how the conflicts and tensions of the past have shaped our present and how, in many ways, the conflicts surrounding classism, xenophobia, sexism, and labor from 1913 are not so different from today’s.
