Dearborn Public Schools celebrated some of the positivity that marks life in the district by recognizing those who have earned awards to make the community a better place to live.
“We're going to have a little video from our Care to the Core Day,” Superintendent Glenn Maleyko said during a board meeting April 10. “This was also covered by CBS News from reporter Amir Jacobson, who went with us throughout the day on the bus as we were doing positive activities for our traditional Care to the Core Day.”
The day lets students get out in the community and do beneficial activities. The clip showed a variety of the activities.
“It was a great day of activities,” Maleyko said. “And I really got to give credit to our staff, our students and the school community for coming together.”
Other positive events were highlighted at the meeting.
Dearborn students Liliana Turfah and Maya Hassan announced that district bus drivers Venise Ledford and Ervin Warren were chosen to receive Wayne County Excellence in Transportation awards.
They also acknowledged the 16 students from the Dearborn Center for Math, Science, and Technology who attended the Science and Engineering Fair last month in Detroit. Rawan Fakih took first place in her category, Hadi Beydoun, Jad Elhinnawi, and Sam Roberts were third in theirs, and several others received fourth- and fifth-place finishes.
Also, Dearborn High School students received commendation for their record amount of nominations for the Student Production Award from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Michigan chapter. Two students earned seven nominations each. Both finalists in the Long Film category are from Dearborn High. The awards ceremony will be held this weekend.
The students also announced the results of recent fundraising efforts, with Edsel Ford’s team raising almost $6,200 in their charity week to give to earthquake victims in Syria and Turkey.
Salina Intermediate School students raised $2,400 to support four orphans for a year, well beyond their goal of only one child to support. Geer Park Elementary raised almost $2,500 for earthquake victims.
