Wayne State women's tennis receives ITA academic honors

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's tennis squad, which won the GLIAC Tournament for the third straight season and advanced to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals for the second year in a row, received the ITA All-Academic Team award along with six student-athletes being recognized with ITA Scholar-Athlete honors.

To be recognized as an ITA All-Academic Team, programs must meet specific requirements:

- Have a team grade point average of 3.2 or above (on a 4.00 scale).

- All student-athletes included should be listed on the institutional eligibility form.

- All varsity letterwinners should be factored into the team GPA for the current academic year.

WSU posted a 3.62 average GPA for the 2023-24 academic year.

Earning Scholar-Athlete accolades for having a grade-point average of at least 3.5 (on a 4.00 scale) for this past academic year (2023-24) and being listed on the institutional eligibility form were:

Malak Arafat, So., Alexandria, Egypt, 3.65, Electrical and Computer Engineering

Justine Beaulieu, Fr., Montreal, Quebec, 3.88, Exploratory Life Sciences

Dessyre Obedencio, Fr., Warren, Mich., 3.95, Nursing

Anais Ruyssen, RJr., Nantes, France, 3.86, Management

Martyna Szpakowska, So., Gdansk, Poland, 3.88, Psychology

Shanice Weekes, So., London, England, 3.91 World Languages Literatures and Cultures

Wayne State compiled a 21-6 overall record that included a perfect 7-0 league mark claimed the GLIAC Tournament title won an NCAA Midwest Regional and advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the second consecutive year.
