Freshman Claudia Portillo from Wayne State University's women's golf team has been named GLIAC Women's Golfer of the Week for the first time in her career. The announcement was made by the league on Thursday afternoon.
Portillo's recognition follows her victory at the inaugural Warrior Invitational held on Tuesday at Orchards Golf Club in Washington, Michigan. Competing against 51 student-athletes, she led the field through round one and finished with a two-round score of 148 (+4, 72-76). This makes her the fifth player in program history to win an event.
Her performance also helped Wayne State secure the Team Championship, marking their first team title of the year and the earliest in a season since September 22-23, 2018, at Ohio Dominican's Cumberland Trail Classic. In three events this season, Portillo has tied for 12th place, been a runner-up, and achieved a first-place finish. She currently averages a score of 74.3 through seven holes played.
Next week, Portillo and her teammates will compete for the fourth consecutive Monday-Tuesday event to start the season. They will participate in Findlay's William Beall Fall Classic from September 30 to October 1 at Findlay Country Club in Findlay, Ohio.
