Wayne State University's men's golf team concluded the Doc Spragg Fall Invitational in Findlay, Ohio, on Tuesday, securing a fourth-place finish. This marks the first time this season that the Warriors did not win a tournament after starting the 2024-25 campaign with four consecutive victories. The team posted a three-round score of 868 (+4), finishing just six strokes behind the second place.
Andrew Daily from Brighton, Michigan led Wayne State individually, tying for 11th place with an even-par score of 216 (69-73-74). Head coach Mike Horn commented on the team's performance: "We battled the weather again today and made a move midway through the round, but just couldn't really put anything together. We've got to clean up our par five scoring going into the spring and next week. That is the difference between us winning week to week and finishing where we did this week."
Horn also noted positive aspects of their play: "Overall, good rebound day by Ian Smith and good rebound today from a tough start for Andrew Daily. Josh, Max and Mat all were solid, but could not get it going for us to make a move. Good finish for us in a strong field. We still have to learn how to be our best week in and week out."
The individual performances included Max Leppelmeier from Wauseon, Ohio, and Josh DiCarlo from Amherstburg, Ontario both tying for 16th place with scores of 217 (+1). Mat Hawryluk from Chatham, Ontario finished tied for 25th with a score of 219 (+3), while Ian Smith from Canton, Michigan tied for 73rd at 230 (+14).
In addition to Wayne State's placement, Grand Valley State claimed first place (-24), followed by Ashland in second (-2) and Findlay in third (+2). Missouri-St. Louis and Palm Beach Atlantic shared fifth place.
Wayne State's record stands at an impressive 62-3 over five fall tournaments. They will compete once more before transitioning to their spring schedule at their own HawksHead Invitational on October 19-20 at HawksHead Golf Course in South Haven, Michigan.
