Wayne State University's football team faced a tough match against Ferris State University, losing 27-14 in a game delayed by weather conditions. The game, initially halted on Saturday due to lightning, resumed on Sunday with Ferris State leading 10-0.
In the first quarter, Wayne State's opening drive resulted in a punt after one first down. Ferris State capitalized with a 71-yard drive ending in a field goal by Mitchell Middleton. A significant play was Trinidad Chambliss's 46-yard pass to Cam Underwood. Despite an interception by Wayne State, their defense held strong as Ferris failed to score after taking over at the Warrior 37-yard line.
The second quarter saw Ferris extending their lead to 10-0 following a touchdown drive concluded by Chambliss's one-yard run. The game was suspended shortly after due to lightning and resumed the next day. Wayne State managed two first downs before punter Avery Burch pinned Ferris at their own 13-yard line. Carl Ware intercepted Chambliss during this period, but Wayne State's offense was again intercepted soon after.
Ferris scored another touchdown just before halftime with Chambliss connecting with Brady Rose for a one-yard pass.
In the third quarter, Wayne State's defense stopped Chambliss on fourth-and-one from the Bulldog 40. This set up a scoring opportunity that Champion Edwards converted into points with passes and D'Marco Singleton running for a touchdown. Edwards later connected with Myles McKatherine for another score, narrowing the gap to three points at 17-14.
Ferris responded quickly with Zak Ahern completing a two-play drive including his two-yard touchdown run following Chambliss’s long rush.
In the final quarter, Middleton added another field goal for Ferris concluding their scoring at 27-14.
Statistically, Ferris dominated total offense and rushing yards while penalties were heavily skewed against them compared to Wayne State’s minimal infractions.
For Wayne State, Singleton led rushing efforts while Edwards completed passes for modest yardage despite three interceptions. Defensively, Brayden Vredeveld and Clifton Buchanan Jr. each made seven tackles alongside Ware’s notable defensive contributions including an interception and forced fumble.
Chambliss stood out for Ferris both in rushing and passing supported by Rose’s receptions and Underwood’s receiving yards contribution.
Wayne State is scheduled to face Davenport next Saturday at Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex in Caledonia, Michigan.
