Wayne State women tied sixth after first day of GLIAC championships

The Wayne State University women's outdoor track and field team is currently tied for sixth place after the first day of competition at the 2024 GLIAC Championships in Allendale, Michigan. The event features ten schools competing for top honors.

In the team scores, Grand Valley State leads with 46 points, followed by Saginaw Valley State with 30 points and Davenport with 29 points. Wayne State has accumulated 14 points, tying with Lake Superior State.

Wayne State's athletes achieved notable performances, including setting a new school record in the 400m hurdles preliminaries by Keneisha Thomas and equaling another school mark in the 200m dash preliminaries by Hanne Bastiaansen. In total, Warriors secured nine all-time top ten marks in program history.

Due to potential weather issues, the 10,000m race was postponed from Thursday evening and will now take place on Friday morning at 9:40 a.m.

In individual events, Peyton Hansen finished ninth in javelin while Mikayla Williams placed thirteenth. In hammer throw, Kaleigh Flowers took sixth place earning three points for Wayne State. In long jump, Williams came seventh securing two points for her team.

Katherine Ray earned eight points for Wayne State by finishing second in steeplechase with a time that ranks third all-time in WSU history. Robin Bresolin also contributed one point with an eighth-place finish.

In preliminary events where top competitors advance to finals on Friday, Thailyia Christensen ranked third in the 1500m run prelims. Keneisha Thomas stood out again by ranking seventh in both the 100m hurdles and setting a new school record in the 400m hurdles.

Other notable performances include Hanne Bastiaansen placing fifth in the 100m dash prelims and tying a school record as second-fastest in the 200m dash prelims.

The final day of competition will see athletes participating in various events including discus, high jump, relays, shot put, triple jump, and others alongside the rescheduled 10,000m race.
