Wayne State University's women's basketball team faced a tough challenge against Ferris State, resulting in an 80-46 loss on Thursday evening at the Wayne State Fieldhouse. The Warriors now hold an 11-6 overall record and are 4-4 in the GLIAC conference, while Ferris State improved to 13-2 overall and 7-1 in the GLIAC.
In the first quarter, Wayne State began with a promising start, scoring the first five points through Alyssa Leister's three-pointer and Kate McArthur's jumper. However, Ferris State responded with a strong performance, outscoring Wayne State 17-7 by the end of the period. A significant part of this was due to a 13-0 run from Ferris between the six-minute mark and just under two minutes remaining.
The second quarter saw Ferris State continue to dominate, doubling up on Wayne State with a score of 20-10 for that period. The Bulldogs extended their lead to as much as 16 points early in the quarter. Becca Fugate's three-pointer was one of the few highlights for Wayne State during this stretch.
After halftime, Ferris maintained their momentum with a 17-0 run over more than five minutes into the third quarter. Although Gabi Lutchka ended this drought with a three-pointer for Wayne State, Ferris had already established a substantial lead. The Warriors managed to narrow the gap slightly by reducing it to 31 points by the end of the third quarter thanks to Shea Tripp’s eight consecutive points.
The final quarter was relatively even, with Ferris edging out Wayne State by just three points. Annabel Ayrault made contributions late in the game, including a lay-up that capped off a brief seven-point run for Wayne State.
Statistically, Ferris converted on nearly half of their field goal attempts and were effective from beyond the arc with ten successful three-pointers out of twenty-three attempts. In contrast, Wayne State struggled with accuracy from both field goals and three-point range. Additionally, Ferris capitalized on turnovers more effectively than Wayne State.
Shea Tripp led Wayne State with ten points and shared top honors for steals along with McArthur. On Ferris' side, Chloe Idoni stood out with eighteen points alongside contributions across multiple categories including rebounds and assists.
Wayne State will look to bounce back when they face Lake Superior State at home on Saturday afternoon.
