The Wayne State University men's golf team is tied for fourth place after the first day of the SVSU Spring Invitational at Kearney Hill. The Warriors completed the opening round with a score of 287 (-1), sharing their position with Illinois Springfield and Tiffin among a field of 21 teams.

Head coach Mike Horn commented on the team's performance, stating, "Today was a very solid performance up and down the lineup. Congratulations to Harrison and Adam on their outstanding play. Every guy played decently, but we got to put it together a little deeper tomorrow."

Individually, Harrison Chapman from Marshall, Michigan, and Adam Burghardt from New Baltimore, Michigan/Warren De La Salle both finished tied for 11th place with scores of 69 (-3). Coach Horn highlighted areas for improvement: "I think our par five scoring was outstanding, but we slipped up on the par threes today and we've got to take a little more direct aim tomorrow. We can't play so defensively."

The top performers for Wayne State included Max Leppelmeier (Wauseon, Ohio/Pettisville) who is tied for 15th with a score of -2 (70), followed by Josh DiCarlo (Amherstburg, Ontario/General Amherst) at -1 (71) in 21st place. Mat Hawryluk (Chatham, Ontario/Ursuline College Chatham) and Tyler Hurtubise (Essex, Ontario/Essex District) both scored +1 (73), tying them for 35th.

Coach Horn remains optimistic about their prospects in the next round: "I think we are prepared and poised to make a run tomorrow. I think we played well today but did not capitalize. I liked the effort from all eight guys."

The team standings show UIndy leading with -12 (276), followed by Ferris State at -10 (278), Missouri S&T at -5 (283), while Wayne State shares fourth place with Illinois Springfield and Tiffin at -1 (287).

Round two will commence Sunday at 10 a.m.
