Wayne State men’s golf team aims to improve standing in NCAA Super Regional

Wayne State University's men's golf team improved their performance by two strokes on the second day of the 2024 NCAA Midwest/Central Super Regional at Kickingbird Golf Course in Edmond, Oklahoma. The Warriors recorded a score of 266 on Friday, following an opening round of 288. Despite this improvement, they dropped to a tie for 16th place among 20 schools with a total score of 574.

Harding University led the competition after day two with a total score of -9 (551), having been tied for first after the initial round. Grand Valley State moved up to second place with a score of 553, while Central Oklahoma climbed three spots to third at 556. Ferris State, Henderson State, and Missouri S&T are tied for fourth at 557. The top five teams after Saturday's final round will advance to the NCAA Finals.

Senior Mat Hawryluk from Chatham, Ontario, and junior Max Leppelmeier from Wauseon, Ohio led Wayne State on Friday with scores of two-under-par 68. Hawryluk is currently tied for 39th place with a total score of 142 over two days, while Leppelmeier is tied for 49th at 143.

Senior Ian Smith from Canton, Michigan shot a three-under-par 67 on Thursday but followed it with a round of 77 on Friday. He is now tied for 52nd place at a total score of 144.

Redshirt senior Josh DiCarlo from Amherstburg, Ontario and redshirt sophomore Adam Burghardt from New Baltimore, Michigan both scored rounds of 75 on Friday. DiCarlo is tied for 85th place at a total score of 148 and Burghardt is tied for 91st at 149.

The Warriors are scheduled to begin their final round at the tournament on Saturday morning at approximately eight twenty central time. To qualify for the NCAA finals, Wayne State must overcome a deficit by making up seventeen strokes against two out of the three teams currently holding fourth position.
