The Wayne State University men's basketball team is set to conclude its home games for the 2023-24 season with two upcoming matches. The Warriors will face Michigan Tech on Thursday night and Northern Michigan on Saturday afternoon.
Wayne State returns to Detroit for these final home games, aiming to reverse earlier losses against both Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan from December. The game against Michigan Tech is scheduled for Thursday at 7:30 p.m., while the match against Northern Michigan will take place on Saturday at 3 p.m., marking Senior Day.
Michigan Tech has shown strength at home, winning seven of their nine overall victories there, but they have struggled away from Houghton with a 2-8 record. Recently, however, the Huskies have secured three consecutive wins after a challenging period where they lost six out of seven games.
Northern Michigan leads the GLIAC standings and has already secured a home court quarterfinal game in the league tournament. Despite this strong position, they have experienced two conference losses in their last four games following a streak of ten consecutive GLIAC victories.
In historical matchups, Wayne State holds a lead over Michigan Tech with an all-time series score of 56-40 and has been more successful at home with a record of 35-12. However, recent encounters have favored the Huskies who won nine out of the last eleven meetings. Against Northern Michigan, Wayne State trails slightly in their all-time series (42-41) but maintains a better record at home (27-17).
Michigan Tech's offense is led by Marcus Tomashek, averaging 22.1 points per game and ranking eighth in Division II scoring. Coach Josh Buettner guides the team in his third year with an overall record of 40-41.
Northern Michigan's squad features five players averaging at least 9.5 points per game under coach Matt Majkrzak's leadership. Max Weisbrod leads NMU with an average of 16.9 points per game and also tops assists within the team.
In their last outing against Ferris State, Wayne State initially gained momentum but ultimately fell short despite leading early in the second half. Ferris State capitalized on an extended run to secure victory by eight points.
Wayne State's Carmelo Harris leads his team in scoring with an average of 13.3 points per contest while Ray Williams Jr., Colin Golson Jr., Tamario Adley, Matt Coffey, and Rob Lee Jr. contribute significantly as well.
All men's basketball games are broadcast live on WDTK - The Patriot (1400 AM / 101.5 FM), marking its twenty-second consecutive season airing WSU basketball.
Kevin Brechmacher continues his role as commentator for WSU men's games alongside former Warriors Chuck Key, Marcus Moore or Andy Dold during home broadcasts.
