The Wayne State University Athletics Hall of Fame recently held its 48th annual induction ceremony on October 25, 2024, at The Eastern in Detroit. Among the honorees was Andreea Mitrache, a notable figure in women's tennis during her time at the university.
Mitrache had an impressive collegiate career from 2013 to 2018. She was recognized as a three-time First Team All-GLIAC selection and earned the title of GLIAC Player of the Year for the 2015-16 season. Her freshman year saw her playing second and third singles, but she quickly moved up to second singles as a sophomore, where she achieved an undefeated record in GLIAC matches and tournaments.
In the 2015-16 season, Mitrache excelled with a perfect singles record at the first flight and an impressive performance in doubles. Her achievements that year earned her both the GLIAC Player of the Year honors and a spot among six recipients of the Fall 2015 GLIAC Commissioner's Award. Despite missing significant time due to injury, she returned strong for her senior year, achieving high regional rankings.
Over her career, Mitrache compiled a singles record of 64-18 and a doubles record of 59-27. Her contributions were instrumental in Wayne State's success during her tenure, including winning their first NCAA Regional title in program history in 2014.
Academically, Mitrache excelled as well. She maintained a high GPA throughout her studies as a Spanish and Psychology Honors double major and was named to various academic honor rolls each semester. Her dedication earned her multiple scholar-athlete awards and recognition from both athletic and academic institutions.
The induction into Wayne State's Hall of Fame highlights Mitrache's significant contributions both on and off the court during her time at the university.
