Wayne State fencing faces challenges at NFC Championships

The Wayne State women's fencing team participated in the NFC Championships held at Brown University's Olney-Margolies Athletic Center over the weekend. The team faced tough competition and managed to secure a victory against Sacred Heart with a score of 13-12, while falling to Wellesley, Brown, Tufts, MIT, Boston College, Vassar, Wagner, and Brandeis.

In the epee category, Wayne State's athletes had notable success. Sophomore Reka Galfalvy from Budapest led the team's performance by winning 20 out of her 27 bouts. Fellow sophomore Salma Abdrabou from Egypt achieved 19 wins in her matches, while graduate student Vika Shevchenko from Troy recorded a 13-14 record.

Junior Ludovica Mancini from Rome excelled in the foil category by securing victories in 24 of her 26 bouts. Sophomore Noreen Bongado also competed but won only three bouts.

In sabre competition, redshirt senior Reagan Byars from Warren secured three wins and junior Mehreen Siddiqui from Canton claimed one victory.

Head Coach Andy Tulleners commented on the event: "This weekend was a tough weekend with very strong competition. Four of the teams were nationally ranked. We were also short on our women's foil and sabre squads. The women's team had some great individual successes. When we were collectively focused on the team, we showed our best team performance. As we move forward into the next semester of competition, we are going to keep developing our women's team focus for better team results."

Wayne State will next compete at home during the Danosi Open on January 11.
