Wayne State University student-athlete Evie Dice is making an impact beyond her swimming achievements. As Co-President of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), she leads community outreach initiatives in Detroit. Dice, who competes in backstroke and freestyle events, has participated in NCAA and GLIAC championships. Her dedication to swimming earned her recognition as a four-time GLIAC honoree.
Dice joined SAAC during her junior year, a committee that gives student-athletes a voice in NCAA policies. She quickly rose to Co-President, leading the mental health committee while excelling academically. She completed her undergraduate degree in exercise and sports science in three years and is now pursuing a master's with a minor in psychology.
As Co-President, Dice aims to make SAAC more active and engaged with the local community. "I really wanted to make SAAC more exciting, legit, and actually do things in the community," she said. Despite challenges, such as low awareness about SAAC among non-athletes, she works to promote its activities.
Dice encourages other athletes to get involved: "You get to meet other athletes, you get to meet new people." She attended a leadership conference in Florida where she gained skills applicable to her role at SAAC.
Her commitment extends to volunteering at events like the 9/11 meal packing and Detroit Marathon aid station. "The meal packing event was such a meaningful experience," she stated about preparing meals for those in need.
Evie Dice's time at Wayne State reflects leadership and resilience. Her balance of academics, athletics, and leadership roles showcases her determination. As she pursues occupational therapy school, Dice leaves behind a legacy of service that inspires others.
