Wayne State University's swimming and diving teams marked Senior Day 2025 with a sweep against Division III Calvin at the Matthaei Natatorium in Detroit. The 21st-ranked men's team secured a victory over No. 7 Calvin with a score of 112.5-90.5, while the 19th-ranked women's team triumphed over the No. 17 Knights, finishing at 118-84.
"This was a fun event, and kicking off the meet with our senior recognition was amazing," stated head coach Sean Peters. "These 13 seniors are honor roll students, about five of them are already in grad school, finishing faster than the usual four-year span, and they are great leaders within our program, department and university. They are the story today, and today is their day. We did our best to make today a wonderful final meet at Matthaei for them."
The men's team celebrated seven victories in various events: Khalil Ben Ajmia won the 1000 free with a time of 9:32.16; Trevor Jones took first place in the 200 free clocking in at 1:39.74; Gabriel Arias excelled in both the 200 IM and the 100 back with times of 1:50.03 and 51.25 respectively; Josh Mahaney won the 100 fly at 51.37; Olin Charnstrom claimed victory in the 100 free with a time of 45.77; William Debroux finished first in the 500 free at 4:33.07.
The women's team achieved eight victories: Emily Hedley won both the 1000 free and the 500 free with times of 10:31.22 and 5:21.58 respectively; Alli Vassilakos came first in the 200 free at 1:58.45; Sabine Branford took top spots in both the 50 free and the 100 free with times of 23.95 and 54.68 respectively; Elly Belmore secured victory in the 100 fly at a time of 59.49; Evie Dice won the 100 back clocking in at 59.91; Delaney Parker claimed first place in the 100 breast with a time of1:07.24.
Following this successful event, Wayne State's teams will now focus on preparing for their postseason competitions starting with the GLIAC Championships from February19-22 at Holland Aquatic Center.
