The Wayne State University men's tennis team began its 2025 spring season with a commanding performance against Lawrence Tech University in an exhibition match held in Detroit. The Warriors secured a 6-1 victory over the Blue Devils.
In doubles competition, Wayne State won all three matches. Cedric Drenth and George Day, ranked second in the Midwest region and ninth nationally, achieved a 6-2 win against Lawrence Tech's Joaquin Zenteno and Nils Hammarsten. Sam Knowles and Tom Wasner followed suit with a 6-1 victory over Carlos Patricio Merlo and Takuya King. The pair of Luis Klaus and Max Faniel completed the sweep by defeating Evan Morgan and Rafael Mendes 6-2.
In singles play, Wayne State continued their success by winning five out of six matches. Drenth triumphed over Evan Morgan 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 1 position, while Day defeated Zenteno 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2 singles. Lawrence Tech earned its only win when Klaus was narrowly defeated by Hammarsten in a tie-breaker at No. 3 singles.
Wasner claimed victory against King with scores of 6-2, 6-1; Benjamin Hill overcame Mendes with identical scores; and Knowles bested Merlo with a scoreline of 6-1, 6-4.
Looking ahead, the Wayne State men's tennis team will travel to Indianapolis to face UIndy on Saturday, February 8th at 3:00 PM.
