Wayne State women’s basketball defeats Michigan Tech with strong defensive showing

The Wayne State University women's basketball team secured a decisive victory over Michigan Tech University, winning 66-44 in Detroit. This win brings the Warriors' overall record to 14-7 and their conference record to 9-4 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). Michigan Tech's record now stands at 9-12 overall and 6-7 in the GLIAC.

Wayne State maintained control for most of the game, only trailing for a brief period of four minutes and forty-two seconds. The Warriors' defense was particularly effective, allowing just 44 points, marking their best defensive performance since December 2023 against Michigan Tech.

In the first quarter, Taylor Thompson opened scoring for Wayne State with a lay-up. After an initial lead by Michigan Tech, Shea Tripp tied the game with two free throws. A scoring drought followed until McKenna Ferguson scored from the foul line. Ferguson then sparked a 12-point run for Wayne State with a three-pointer. By the end of the first quarter, Wayne State led by seven points.

During the second quarter, Michigan Tech closed in briefly before Wayne State extended their lead with consecutive three-pointers. Lexi Boyke broke another scoring lull with a basket that helped maintain Wayne State's advantage at halftime.

Wayne State dominated early in the third quarter, extending their lead to twenty points before closing out the period ahead by eighteen points.

In the final quarter, both teams struggled to score initially until Janie Tormanen made a lay-up for Michigan Tech. However, Wayne State continued to control play and finished strong defensively.

Statistically, Wayne State shot better than Michigan Tech from both field goals and free throws while both teams recorded equal rebounds at thirty-eight each.

McKenna Ferguson led Wayne State offensively with nineteen points and five steals. Shea Tripp contributed eighteen points and seven rebounds. Taylor Thompson added eleven rebounds for her team.

For Michigan Tech, Isabella Lenz scored thirteen points while Janie Tormanen added ten points along with eight rebounds.

Wayne State will next face Northern Michigan on Saturday at home in Detroit's WSU Fieldhouse at 1:00 PM.
