Wayne State men's tennis edges past UIndy with close-fought victory

The Wayne State University men's tennis team secured a narrow 4-3 victory against the University of Indianapolis in a road match. This win marks Wayne State's first triumph of the season, bringing their record to 1-0, while UIndy now stands at 3-1.

In doubles competition, Cedric Drenth and George Day managed to win their match in the No. 1 position with a score of 7-6 against Mathieu Derache and David Simeonov from UIndy. However, Wayne State could not secure the doubles point as Sam Knowles and Tom Wasner were defeated 7-5 by Asier Ayllon Prado and Tadeo Gaggiofatto in the No. 2 spot. Additionally, Luis Klaus and Benjamin Hill lost narrowly with a score of 7-6 to Lorenzo Di Cursi and Manuel Lanteri in the No. 3 position.

In singles play, Drenth continued his strong performance by defeating Simeonov with scores of 6-2, 6-4 in the No. 1 slot. Day also won his singles match against Lanteri with scores of 7-6, 6-2 as the No. 2 player.

Klaus faced a tough opponent in Derache during the No. 3 singles match but was defeated with scores of 7-6, 6-4. Hill also fell short in his singles contest at the No. 5 position against Gaggiofatto with scores of 6-2, 7-6 after losing a second set tie-breaker.

Knowles delivered a victory for Wayne State at the No. 6 position by defeating Di Cursi with scores of 6-1, 6-4.

The deciding factor came down to Wasner's performance at the No.4 spot where he overcame an initial setback after losing his first set (2-6). He rebounded strongly to win both subsequent sets (7-6 following a tie-breaker and then closing out with a decisive third set scoreline of  (6–3), clinching overall success for Wayne State Warriors.

Head Coach Bryan Morrow expressed pride over his team's resilience: "Unbelievable win for this team after losing heartbreaking doubles point... In singles energy fight showed outstanding."

Wayne State is scheduled next face Case Western Reserve University on Friday February14th starting noon local time
