The Wayne State University women's fencing team completed the first day of competition at the Central Collegiate Fencing Conference (CCFC) Championships in Detroit. The team's epee squad achieved five bout wins, securing second place overall.
In the sabre category, Reagan Byars from Warren, Michigan, and Mehreen Siddiqui from Canton, Michigan, represented Wayne State. Byars ended the day with a 3-14 record, earning victories against Denison University, Northwestern University, and Cleveland State University. Siddiqui recorded a 1-16 bout record with her win coming against The Ohio State University.
For the foil weapon, Noreen Bongado from Farmington Hills, Michigan, and Ludovica Mancini from Rome competed for Wayne State. Mancini had a successful day with an 11-4 record that included two 3-0 performances against Denison University and Lawrence University. Bongado participated in 15 bouts but did not secure any wins.
In the epee category, Reka Galfalvy from Budapest led her team with a 14-3 record including perfect scores against Denison, Ohio State, and Lawrence. Vika Shevchenko from Troy also performed well with a 10-7 mark featuring a flawless performance against Lawrence. Salma Abdrabou from Cairo impressed as well with a 12-5 record including perfect scores against Denison and Lawrence.
The Wayne State women's fencing team will continue their participation in the CCFC Championships on Sunday, February 23.
