Wayne State fencers conclude CCFC Championships with strong performances

The Wayne State University men's fencing team completed its participation in the Central Collegiate Fencing Conference (CCFC) Championships on Sunday. The event, held in Detroit, featured individual competitions across three weapons: epee, foil, and sabre.

In the epee category, Mahmoud Elsayed stood out by securing first place. Elsayed finished pool play with a 9-1 record and advanced through the direct elimination stage to defeat Nowell Gibson of The Ohio State University 15-11 in the finals. Lance Miller, Sam Garrett, Shuayb Dinkins, and Bryce Heim also represented Wayne State in this weapon. Garrett narrowly missed advancing to the elimination stage despite a strong performance in pool play.

For foil competitors from Wayne State, Ethan Leung reached the direct elimination stage but was defeated by Justin Vogler 15-9. Jakub Oronowicz ended with a positive touch differential but did not advance past pool play. Other participants included Sam Gneuhs, Bobbie Hirsch, Mitchell Gatrell, and Carlos Santos.

In sabre competition, Zeyad Nofal excelled during pool play with a 10-1 record and progressed to the finals after two victories in elimination rounds. However, he was bested by Nolan Williams 15-10 in the final match. Brendan Goeddeke also competed but did not secure any wins.

Overall, Wayne State's fencers delivered notable performances at the CCFC Championships across all categories.
