Wayne State University's men's tennis team, ranked No. 13, achieved a 6-1 victory over Hillsdale College on Saturday afternoon. This match marked the final competition for Wayne State before their upcoming spring-break trip to Florida.
In doubles play, Wayne State secured all three matches to earn the first point. Cedric Drenth and George Day won in the No. 1 position with a score of 6-1 against Henry Hammond and Ellis Klanduch. In the No. 2 slot, Sam Knowles and Tom Wasner claimed a 6-2 victory over Samuel Plys and Eddie Bergelin. Luis Klaus and Max Faniel triumphed in a close match at No. 3 doubles, defeating Rintaro Goda and Ryan Papazov 6-4.
In singles action, Drenth overcame Klanduch in two sets, winning the second set after trailing initially. Day faced Papazov, winning his match after losing the second set but securing the third decisively. Wasner and Klaus also secured wins in their respective positions with Wasner defeating Bergelin convincingly while Klaus battled through three sets against Plys.
Knowles was defeated by Hammond at No. 5 singles in straight sets while Benjamin Hill rallied from a first-set loss to win his match against Goda.
Head Coach Bryan Morrow commented on the performance saying, "We got through a tough one, Hillsdale played well and competed really hard... Fortunately we got through it."
Next up for Wayne State is their spring break trip to Florida where they will face several top-ranked opponents including Ave Maria University, Flagler College, Barry University, Rollins College, and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
