Wayne State women’s tennis prepares for final non-conference match against Oakland

The Wayne State University women's tennis team is set to face Oakland University on Sunday, March 23, at 11:00 AM. This match marks the final non-conference game for the Warriors this season.

In their last outing, Wayne State secured a victory against Saginaw Valley State University with a score of 6-1. The team won two out of three doubles matches and went on to win five out of six singles matches.

Oakland University currently holds a record of 3-7 and has lost its last three matches. They have achieved victories over Northwood University, Eastern Michigan University, and the University of Redlands. Historically, Wayne State has dominated their encounters with Oakland, winning the last four meetings including a 7-0 victory last year.

David Brown leads Oakland in his second season as head coach. Under his leadership, the Golden Grizzlies have an overall record of 8-21 and reached the Horizon League tournament in 2024.

According to the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings, Wayne State's women's tennis team is ranked No. 32 in Division II. Individually ranked players include Martyna Szpakowska at 26th, Anais Ruyssen at 29th, and Malak Arafat at 75th in singles.

In doubles rankings, Arafat and Szpakowska are placed at No.10; Ruyssen paired with Dea Gorgidze ranks No.12; while Ruyssen teamed with Shantala Uzcategui holds the No.28 spot.
