Wayne State women's tennis defeats Grand Valley State 5-2 in GLIAC match

The Wayne State University women's tennis team defeated Grand Valley State University with a 5-2 score, maintaining an undefeated record in the GLIAC season. Wayne State, ranked No. 32, now holds a 6-3 overall record and a 3-0 record in the GLIAC, while Grand Valley State, ranked No. 28, faced its first conference loss, bringing its overall record to 9-4 and 3-1 in the GLIAC.

In the doubles competitions, Wayne State’s top duo of Anais Ruyssen and Dea Gorgidze overcame Valentina Mozas and Neus Ramos Moreno with a 6-2 victory in the No. 1 doubles position. Similarly, Malak Arafat and Justine Beaulieu won their match 6-3 against Rachel Sam and Estefania Hernandez in the No. 2 doubles slot. However, Shanice Weekes and Shantala Uzcategui lost their No. 3 doubles match 6-7 (4-7) to Ipek Sakiroglu and Anna Soteras.

In the singles matches, Wayne State dominated the top three positions. Ruyssen defeated Ramos Moreno 7-5, 6-4; Arafat emerged victorious against Mozas 6-3, 6-7 (3-7), 6-2; and Gorgidze outplayed Soteras 7-6 (7-2), 6-3. Martyna Szpakowska also notched a win in the No. 6 singles position against Sam, recovering from a first set loss to win 3-6, 6-0, 10-6.

Despite the overall team success, Weekes and Beaulieu were unable to secure wins in their singles matches. Weekes lost to Hernandez 6-4, 2-6, 1-6 while Beaulieu was defeated by Sakiroglu 3-6, 1-6.

The Wayne State women's tennis team will next compete against Lake Superior State on Friday, April 4.
