Wayne State volleyball falls to No.12 Ferris State after four-set battle

Wayne State University's women's volleyball team lost to 12th-ranked Ferris State in four sets on Saturday at Ewigleben Sports Arena in Big Rapids, Michigan. The Warriors' overall record now stands at 8-3, with a 2-2 mark in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), while Ferris State improves to 8-4 overall and 3-1 in conference play.

The match ended with set scores of 24-26, 23-25, 25-21, and 23-25. Wayne State managed to win the third set and led late in the fourth before Ferris State finished with a decisive run.

Wayne State posted a .228 hitting percentage for the match, tallying 58 kills and committing 22 errors on 158 total attacks. Ferris State recorded a .205 hitting percentage with 51 kills and 19 errors from 156 attempts. Both teams were most effective offensively during the third set; Wayne State hit .394 in that frame.

Freshman Katerina Stout achieved double-digit kills for the first time in her career, finishing with 13 kills and only one error on 22 attempts for a .545 hitting percentage. She also contributed three solo blocks defensively. Stout was one of five Warriors who reached double figures in kills, alongside Kayla Giroux (11), Leigha Baldwin (11), Lauren Essenpreis (11), and Paige Giehtbrock (10).

Essenpreis's performance marked her personal best for total attacks, while Baldwin notched a new season high in kills. Kayla Dulgar provided support with 45 assists and added two service aces along with Giehtbrock. Dulgar also collected her fifth double-double of the season—her career total now stands at 25—by adding 12 digs.

Kendyl Andrews led all players with a season-high of 25 digs. Essenpreis recorded her first collegiate double-double by contributing both offensive and defensive efforts.

For blocks, Giroux assisted on three while Stout had three solo blocks. Baldwin added two blocks as well.

Looking ahead, Wayne State will continue its road schedule by facing No.19 Grand Valley State on Thursday in Allendale, with the match scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
