Wayne State men's tennis concludes ITA Midwest Regional with strong singles and doubles results

The Wayne State University men's tennis team concluded its participation in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Midwest Regional Championships, held from September 27 to 29 in Allendale, Michigan. The event featured teams from the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC), and Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC).

Wayne State finished with a 20-10 record in singles matches and a 10-6 mark in doubles play over the three-day tournament.

Benjamin Hill led the team by winning the Singles B Draw title. He achieved five victories and secured the championship with a 4-6, 6-4, 10-5 win against Vladislav Gorbatenko of the University of Indianapolis. Warren Gunnar advanced to the final round of the C Draw after earning three wins but was defeated by top-seeded Kai Van-Room from Illinois Springfield, 6-2, 7-5.

In doubles competition, Luis Klaus and Harry Forsyth posted a 4-1 record in the A Draw but lost in their final match to a pair from Grand Valley State University.

Tournament results for singles included: Cole Anderson (1-1), George Day (1-1), Max Faniel (2-1), Harry Forsyth (3-1), Warren Gunnar (3-1), Benjamin Hill (6-0), Luis Klaus (2-1), Sam Knowles (1-1), Thomas Mathys (1-1), and Tom Wasner (0-2). In doubles: Day/Wasner went 2-1; Klaus/Forsyth finished at 4-1; Gunnar/Anderson were 0-2; Hill/Faniel went 1-1; Mathys/Knowles were 3-1.

The team's next appearance will be at the ITA Cup, scheduled for October 16 to October 18. The singles and doubles champions from each of eight regions will receive automatic bids to the ITA Cup. Four regional finalists and four quarterfinalists will also qualify through at-large selections based on last year's rankings and quality of wins.
