The Horatio Williams Foundation and Wayne State University Department of Athletics will co-host the first Hoops and Culture event from October 29 to 31 in Detroit. The multi-day event will take place at the WSU Fieldhouse.
Activities begin on Wednesday, October 29, with a welcome reception and a wellness event organized by Detroit Medical Center.
On Thursday, October 30, high school students will participate in an HBCU Resource Fair before the general public is admitted at 11 a.m. for four college basketball games. Amazon is supporting Thursday’s events. The scheduled matchups are Wilberforce vs. Grand Valley State at noon, Wayne State vs. Talladega at 2:30 p.m., Central State vs. Detroit Mercy at 5:00 p.m., and Tuskegee vs. Eastern Michigan at 7:30 p.m. One ticket provides access to all games, with advance tickets available for $20 plus fees.
Friday’s activities are sponsored by the Dan Gilbert Family Foundation and also held at WSU Fieldhouse. The day opens with an Earn Your Leisure (EYL) book signing from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., followed by a trade school resource fair and certification opportunities. At noon, EYL will moderate a panel discussion titled "Pathways and Purpose," which will address topics such as business and sports careers, overcoming adversity, career choices versus jobs, and networking.
A networking mixer runs from 1:15 to 2 p.m., followed by closing remarks to end the inaugural Hoops and Culture event.
