Mitchell Gatrell, Senior Player | Wayne State Warriors Women's Fencing
Multiple student-athletes from Wayne State University's fencing program participated in the Remenyik Open at Northwestern University in Libertyville, Illinois, over the weekend of October 18-19.
The competition was divided into two categories: the Regional Open Circuit (ROC) and the Regional Junior Cadet Circuit (JRCC).
In the foil events, three members of Wayne State's men's fencing team competed in Division 1-A Men's Foil. Mitchell Gatrell, Finn McIsaac, and Sam Gneuhs represented the university. Ludovica Mancini from the women's team took part in Division 1-A Women's Foil. McIsaac also participated in the Junior Men's Foil event.
Gatrell achieved a strong start with a 5-1 record in pool play and a +21 touch differential (29-8). He advanced through direct elimination with five consecutive victories before losing 15-13 to Christopher Lee in the final bout, finishing second overall in D1-A Men's Foil.
McIsaac also recorded a 5-1 pool record with a +13 touch differential (27-14). He progressed to the Table of 16 but was defeated by William Bailey, 15-8.
Gneuhs posted a 3-3 record in pool play and outscored his opponents by five touches (25-20). He won his first direct elimination match but was eliminated by Graydon Schulze-Kalt in the Table of 64.
Mancini finished pool play at 4-1 with a +16 touch differential (24-8). After advancing past her first elimination round with a decisive win, she was defeated by Bridgette Ouyang in the Table of 32.
In sabre, Gwyd Perry competed in both ROC and JRCC events. In ROC pool play, Perry went undefeated at 6-0 with an +18 touch differential (30-12), earning him the No. 3 seed for direct elimination. He received a bye to start but lost narrowly in his next match, 15-14. In junior competition, Perry finished pool play at 2-4 and exited after falling 15-5 during direct elimination.
Bryce Heim represented Wayne State in epee, finishing pool play at 5-1 with a +9 touch differential (26-17). Heim won two matches after receiving an initial bye but was defeated by top-seeded Julian Spier in the Table of 16.
The Wayne State fencing program will compete next at The Ohio State University's Elite Invitational on November 8 and 9 at French Field House.
