Wayne State baseball sweeps Tiffin with strong pitching and late offense

The Wayne State University baseball team completed a four-game sweep of Tiffin with a 6-1 win on Sunday at UC Baseball Stadium in Cincinnati. The Warriors, now 4-0 overall, will next play Lewis in a four-game series at USA Stadium in Millington, Tennessee.

Starting pitcher Gabe Nazelli made his season debut for Wayne State and delivered five scoreless innings. He allowed three hits, struck out five batters, and did not issue any walks over 73 pitches. Despite this performance, he did not factor into the decision.

Wayne State scored first in the second inning when Rhett Roeser reached on a fielder’s choice, bringing Drew Hill home from third base. Tiffin tied the game in the seventh inning.

In the eighth inning, Caleb Sanders singled for the second time after entering as a pinch-hitter. His hit drove in both Hill and Roeser to give Wayne State a 3-1 lead. The Warriors added three more runs in the ninth. Roeser singled to bring home pinch-runner Steven Whitted, and Garza doubled to drive in Alfredo Velazquez and Roeser.

Philip Miller entered from the bullpen for his first appearance with Wayne State and pitched two innings, allowing one earned run on two hits with one walk and four strikeouts. Miller was credited with the win.

Ethan Getting pitched the eighth inning without giving up a hit but issued two walks while striking out three batters. Joel Mator made his collegiate debut in the ninth inning, allowing one hit and recording one strikeout.

Wayne State Warriors Men’s Baseball plays its home games in Detroit, Michigan, competes at the NCAA Division II level within the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), and is known by its mascot “W the Warrior” according to its official website. The team won the GLIAC Tournament championship in 2010.
