The Wayne State University men’s golf team finished second at the Bill Blazer Memorial Match Play Championship against Ohio Dominican, according to an April 12 announcement. The event took place in Lancaster, Ohio, where Wayne State, the top seed, was narrowly defeated by host and two seed Ohio Dominican with a final score of 3-2.
This result is significant as it comes just before the team’s participation in the upcoming Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championships. Wayne State competes in NCAA Division II intercollegiate athletics and holds membership in the GLIAC, according to the official website.
In Sunday’s match play championship, Andrew Daily and Jack Julian secured wins for Wayne State. However, Grant Ofield, Josh Lahner and Troy Chapman lost their matches. Individually, Will Pollack placed second out of 18 players during stroke play competition while Luke Maher finished sixth.
“We certainly did not execute today coming down the stretch,” said head coach Mike Horn. “Hats off to ODU for playing very well and executing during crunch time. It’s always fun to compete against the Panthers. Coach (Chris) Deibel does an outstanding job. Congratulations to Andrew (Daily) for winning all three matches. And hopefully we can take lessons away from this for the GLIAC Championship in just a couple of days.”
Wayne State’s men’s golf program operates from Detroit, Michigan according to its official website. The team will next compete at Stoatin Brae Golf Club in Augusta on April 16-17 for postseason play and a chance at further honors within their conference.
