The Wayne State University men’s golf team finished the first 36 holes of the Stroke Play Championship at the 2026 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championships on Apr. 16, holding fourth place among nine teams with a score of 573 (+5, 288-285). The event is taking place at Stoatin Brae Golf Club.
The results are significant as only the top two teams after all three rounds will advance to the Medal Match Play Championship and have a chance to defend last year’s GLIAC title. Head coach Mike Horn said, “The Warriors did not get it going today. We battled through multiple rain delays, but just couldn’t get it going in a positive direction. With all that said, we are well within striking distance tomorrow. Nobody is going to catch the leaders, but we just need to be in the top two and we have to play our best tomorrow. Davenport played well today and there are a couple of teams right around us that are going to be hungry and we have to clean things up. We have to have the best day of our season tomorrow and that will give us a chance to play for the championship.”
Individually, Andrew Daily led Wayne State with a score of 141 (-1), tying for eighth place out of forty-three golfers over two rounds (72-69). Other notable scores include Troy Chapman tied for fourteenth with 143 (+1), Jack Julian tied for twenty-first with 144 (+2), and Grant Ofield tied for twenty-fourth with 145 (+3).
After two rounds, Grand Valley State leads at -26 (542), followed by Davenport (-3, 565) and Ferris State (+4, 572). Wayne State is closely behind Ferris State in fourth place.
The Wayne State Warriors Men’s Golf team holds membership in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference according to the official website. The team also participates in NCAA Division II intercollegiate athletics as noted on its official website and operates from Detroit, Michigan according to its official website.
Looking ahead, Friday morning’s third round will begin at 8:30 a.m., where Wayne State must finish among the top two teams after all three rounds for an opportunity at another championship run.
