The Wayne State University men’s golf team will attempt to secure a second consecutive Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) championship on April 16 and 17 at Stoatin Brae Golf Club in Augusta, Michigan.
The event is significant for the Warriors as they look to build on last year’s success and further establish their position within NCAA Division II intercollegiate athletics. The tournament features a nine-team field, with the top two teams after stroke play advancing to compete for the Medal Match Play Championship.
Head coach Mike Horn said, “This is a young team that has a chance to do something special. If they perform like they can, we can finish near the top and play for the championship, but we have to be ready to go and have to be consistent for the entire 54 holes. This team’s got a lot of positive things to build on for next year and doing well at the tournament will just be another step in that process. I’m challenging these young Warriors and asking who is going to step up and lead us this week?!”
The starting lineup includes Andrew Daily of Brighton, Grant Ofield of Ada, Troy Chapman of Lexington (Ohio), Josh Lahner of Roselle (Illinois), and Jack Julian of South Lyon. Will Pollack from Grand Rapids serves as an alternate. The tournament format consists of 36 holes on day one followed by 18 holes on day two for stroke play, which determines individual honors before concluding with match play between the top two teams.
Wayne State enters ranked #35 nationally among participating schools according to SCOREBOARD National Ranking. Other competitors include Grand Valley State (#4), Ferris State (#58), Davenport (#64), Parkside (#94), Saginaw Valley State (#139), Purdue Northwest (#169), Roosevelt (#171), and Northern Michigan (#175). In NCAA Midwest Region Rankings as of April 10, Wayne State stands at #8; only the top ten teams qualify for next month’s Midwest/Central Super Regional.
