Wayne State men’s basketball wins high-scoring contest against Roosevelt

The Wayne State University men’s basketball team secured a 92-85 victory over Roosevelt in Chicago on Thursday night. This win marks the Warriors’ second consecutive road victory, bringing their season record to 12-11 overall and 9-8 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). Roosevelt now stands at 4-20 overall and 3-14 in conference play.

In the opening minutes, Wayne State established an early lead with contributions from Jotham Nweke, Carlos Paul III, and Jalen Jenkins. However, Roosevelt responded with a run of nine straight points to take a brief advantage. The first half saw several shifts in momentum, but Wayne State closed out the period ahead, leading 41-35 at halftime.

The Warriors maintained strong shooting throughout the first half, making over half their field goal attempts and converting efficiently from both three-point range and the free throw line. They also tallied 13 assists compared to six turnovers.

In the second half, Wayne State extended its lead to as much as 12 points. Although Roosevelt managed to narrow the gap multiple times—coming within five points late in the game—the Warriors kept control and finished with a seven-point margin.

Wayne State shot 51.6 percent from the field compared to Roosevelt’s even 50 percent. While Roosevelt made more three-pointers, Wayne State had an edge at the free throw line by converting 21 of 25 attempts. The Warriors also led in assists (23), rebounds (38), points in the paint (44), and bench scoring (14).

Carlos Paul III recorded a career-high 25 points along with his fifth career double-double after collecting 11 rebounds. Jalen Jenkins added a personal best of 20 points and contributed eight assists. Other notable performances included Jordan Briggs with 13 points and Nweke with 11.

For Roosevelt, Hamahrie Bowers scored a game-high 36 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Mikey West added 20 points while Dante Sawyer contributed 17.

Wayne State will next face Parkside on Saturday inside De Simone Arena.
