Multiple members of the Wayne State University men’s fencing team participated in the annual Danosi Open at the Matthaei Center in Detroit on Saturday. The event, which was open to all competitors, did not feature team scoring and each fencer competed individually.
In the men’s epee category, freshman Justin Chenh, senior Shuayb Dinkins, senior Bryce Heim, and senior Cameron King represented Wayne State. Heim finished as runner-up after a close 15-14 victory over Dinkins in the semifinals. Dinkins tied for third place.
The final results for men’s epee were: Heim with an 8-3 record and second place; Dinkins with a 7-2 record tying for third; Chenh with a 6-1 record finishing ninth; and King with a 5-2 record placing tenth.
In men’s foil, participants included freshman Josiah Atkinson, Chenh, junior Sam Gneuhs, senior Mitchell Gatrell, freshman Finn McIsaac, sophomore Jakub Oronowicz, sophomore Carlos Santos, and freshman Lukas Tsao. Tsao and Gatrell both tied for third place with identical 8-2 records. McIsaac finished sixth overall.
Other foil results were: Oronowicz in eleventh place (6-2), Gneuhs in twenty-third (4-4), Santos in twenty-seventh (3-5), Atkinson in twenty-eighth (3-5), and Chenh thirty-second (2-6).
Three Warriors reached the semifinals in men’s sabre. Senior Eyad Marouf won first place after defeating freshman Gabriel Dumoulin 15-8 in the finals. Freshman Connor Desautels tied for third.
Additional sabre placements included Gwyd Perry finishing fifth (6-2), Hunter Battisfore tenth (3-3), and Brendan Goeddeke twelfth (2-4).
Before competition began, seniors Reagan Byars, Mitchell Gatrell, Bryce Heim, Cameron King, Ludovica Mancini, Eyad Marouf, and Mehreen Siddiqui were recognized by the team.
Wayne State Warriors Men’s Fencing competes at the NCAA Division II level within the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (official website). The program is based in Detroit and focuses on skill development as well as competitive performance (official website).
Next on their schedule is participation at the Central Collegiate Fencing Conference Championships at Denison University’s Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse on February 21–22.
