The Wayne State University men’s fencing team secured second place during the team competition at the Central Collegiate Fencing Conference (CCFC) Championships, held Saturday at Denison University in Granville, Ohio.
Wayne State earned three victories, defeating Cleveland State 20-7, Lawrence 15-12, and Detroit Mercy 19-8. The team fell to Ohio State with a score of 18-9.
In the men’s foil event, Wayne State finished second with a 3-1 record and accumulated 23 bout wins. Individual results included Finn McIsaac with a 9-2 record, Carlos Santos at 4-2, Lukas Tsao at 3-3, Mitchell Gatrell at 2-1, Jakub Oronowicz at 2-3, and Sam Gneuhs at 0-2.
The men’s epee squad placed third overall with two wins and two losses, totaling 22 bout victories. Mahmoud Elsayed led the group with a 10-1 performance. Other contributors were Shuayb Dinkins (5-4), Justin Chenh (2-2), Bryce Heim (2-6), and Cameron King (0-1).
In men’s sabre, Wayne State tied for third after achieving two wins and two losses for a total of 18 bout wins. Eyad Marouf posted a record of 7-4; Gabriel Dumoulin went 5-6; Hunter Battisfore was undefeated at 2-0; Brendan Goeddeke finished at 2-1; Gwyd Perry had a mark of 2-2; and Connor Desautels ended at 0-6.
The team will next compete in the individual portion of the conference championships on Sunday.
