The Wayne State University men’s tennis team, ranked No. 20 in NCAA Division II, secured a 5-2 win over Case Western Reserve University on Sunday at the Doris J. & Donald L. Duchene, Sr. Athletic Facility in Detroit.
Case Western Reserve, currently ranked No. 5 in Division III, has reached the National Championship four times in the last five seasons and won the title during the 2022-23 season.
In doubles play, George Day and Thomas Mathys recorded a 6-2 victory at No. 2 doubles, improving their record to 6-1 this spring. The matches at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles were decided by tiebreakers. At the top spot, Harry Forsyth and Luis Klaus lost a close match to Bryce Ware and Trey Lambright, falling 7-6 (7-5). Benjamin Hill and Sam Knowles led early at No. 3 doubles but were overtaken by Rohit Jain and Rowan Matorin of Case Western Reserve, who won 7-6 in a tiebreaker to secure the doubles point for their team.
In singles competition, Day defeated Santiago Salazar Garza with scores of 6-1, 7-5 at the top position. Klaus won against Jon Totorica (ranked No. 36 in Division III singles) with a scoreline of 7-5, 6-3 at No. 2 singles. Mathys prevailed over Josh Davydov at No. 3 singles with identical sets of 6-3.
Hill earned a win against JT Bilski at No. 4 singles with scores of 7-5, 6-1, while Forsyth beat Konrad Kwiatkowski at No. 5 singles with scores of 6-1, 6-2.
At the sixth position, freshman Warren Gunnar played against Rowan Matorin but was defeated after rallying back from deficits in both sets; he lost by scores of 6-4, 7-5.
Wayne State Warriors Men’s Tennis is part of Wayne State University’s intercollegiate athletics program based in Detroit and competes as a member of NCAA Division II within the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (official website). The team will next compete against St. Thomas Aquinas on Wednesday, March 11 in Orlando, Florida.
