The Wayne State University men’s tennis team, ranked No. 23 nationally, secured a 6-1 victory over the University of Findlay on Saturday evening at the Doris J. and Donald L. Duchene, Sr. Athletic Facility in Detroit.

Wayne State claimed the doubles point by winning all three matches. The top duo of Luis Klaus and Harry Forsyth defeated Clement Andrieu and Grant Hawkins 6-3. In the second doubles match, Tom Wasner and Sam Knowles won 6-1 against Aleksander Ivancevic and Nicolo Lippolis. George Day and Thomas Mathys earned a close 7-5 win over Soh Kuyama and Runa Kagoshima in the third position.

In singles play, George Day overcame an initial set loss to defeat Andrieu in three sets (3-6, 6-0, 6-3). Klaus continued his strong season with a straight-set win over Soh Kuyama (6-4, 6-1) at No. 2 singles. Wasner prevailed against Matthis Veniard in a match that went to a third-set tiebreak (6-3, 6-7 [6-8], 10-7). Banjamin Hill improved his singles record to 14-3 for the season after defeating Ivancevic (6-3, 7-5) at No. 4 singles. Mathys recorded a straight-set victory over Lippolis (6-2, 6-2) in the fifth slot.

Sam Knowles lost to Kagoshima in three sets (4-6, 7-6 [7-5], 7-10) at No. 6 singles.

Head coach Bryan Morrow commented on the team’s performance: “Nice win today over a good Findlay team. I was very happy with the energy that the entire team brought during the match and thought that we did a good job of supporting our teammates. Luis (Klaus) had a really nice win over a very good opponent (Soh Kuyama). I have been very impressed with his game so far this year. George (Day) picked up a good win after being a little under the weather and missing our last match. We were able to fight through some adversity and win some tie-break sets against a good in-region team and are all excited for the upcoming West Virginia trip.”
