The Wayne State University men’s tennis team, ranked No. 18, defeated Purdue University Northwest 6-1 on April 10 at the Duchene Athletic Facility in Detroit. The Warriors improved their season record to 11-7 and maintained a perfect mark of 3-0 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
This victory is significant as it avenges last year’s close loss to Purdue Northwest and demonstrates Wayne State’s continued success within its conference. The win also highlights the team’s progress and competitive standing this season.
Wayne State swept all three doubles matches to start the contest. Luis Klaus and Harry Forsyth won their fourth consecutive match with a hard-fought 7-5 result at the top doubles spot. George Day and Thomas Mathys earned a convincing 6-2 win in the No. 2 position, bringing their spring record together to 11-3. Benjamin Hill and Tom Wasner secured a dominant 6-1 victory at No. 3 doubles.
In singles play, Day led with a straight-set win over Samuel Dickson, while Klaus triumphed convincingly against Dani Chicano Melero at No. 2 singles. Wasner posted a two-set victory over Joao Martins at No. 3 singles, Mathys came from behind for a win against Raphael Valente at No.4, and Hill claimed his match against Pedro Diaz Camacho in straight sets at No.5 singles. Forsyth was defeated by Daniel Sroka in the sixth singles slot.
Head coach Bryan Morrow said, “I was pleased with our team’s performance today and thought that we played a clean match in singles and doubles. It was nice to see some of our guys who lost in matches to this team last year pull out impressive wins today.”
Wayne State Warriors Men’s Tennis is part of Wayne State University’s intercollegiate athletics program, according to the official website.
