The Wayne State University men’s tennis team, ranked No. 23 nationally, was defeated 5-2 by the University of Toledo on Friday evening at the Shadow Valley Tennis Club in Toledo, Ohio. The Warriors now hold a 1-1 overall record, while Toledo improved to 4-6.
In doubles play, Wayne State secured an early win when Benjamin Hill and Thomas Mathys posted a 6-3 victory over Pannawat Suttisomboon and AJ Sidoti in the No. 3 position. However, Toledo captured the doubles point as Lucas Britez and Poonthong Komolpisut overcame Harry Forsyth and Luis Klaus with a score of 7-6 (7-3) at No. 1 doubles. In the second doubles match, Sam Knowles and Tom Wasner lost narrowly, 7-5.
During singles competition, Knowles earned a win for Wayne State in the No. 6 spot after defeating Joshua Mackey in three sets: “The Warrior posted a 6-4 win in the first set before being bested 6-3 in the second. Knwoles nabbed an 11-9 triumph in the final set to post the victory.” Wasner fell to Komolpisut at No. 1 singles with scores of 6-2, 6-2.
Hill was defeated by Cole Cozens (6-4, 6-3) at No. 3 singles, while Mathys lost to Matias Olivero (6-4, 7-6 [7-2]) at No. 4 singles. Forsyth dropped his match against Sergio Alejandro Gonzalez (6-3, 6-1) at No. 5 singles.
Klaus recorded another point for Wayne State after winning his first set against Britez (6-4) and leading before Britez retired from their match: “Klaus collected a 6-4 win in the first set over Britez, but was trailing 4-3 before the Toledo student-athlete retired from the match.”
Wayne State Warriors Men’s Tennis is part of Wayne State University’s intercollegiate athletics program based in Detroit, Michigan according to its official website. The team competes in NCAA Division II as a member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and focuses on competitive excellence and athlete development.
The Warriors will next host an in-region match against the University of Findlay on February 14 at the Dors J. and Donald L. Duchene Sr. Athletic Facility.
