The Wayne State University men’s tennis team is scheduled to travel to West Virginia for two matches, facing Fairmont State University on Friday, February 20, and the University of Charleston on Saturday, February 21.
In their most recent outing, Wayne State defeated the University of Findlay 6-1 on February 14. The team won all three doubles matches and all but one singles match, improving its season record to 2-1.
Fairmont State has started its season with victories over Tiffin, Virginia Wise, and Ashland. The Falcons’ top doubles team of Bartosz Losiak and Guilherme Pachane remains undefeated at 4-0. In singles play, Pachane holds a 3-1 record in the No. 1 position while Losiak is unbeaten at No. 2 singles.
Terry Deremer is in his eighth season as head coach at Fairmont State and has led the program to a cumulative record of 74-41. “Deremer was tabbed as the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II National Coach of the Year after the 2023 spring campaign, in which the Falcons advanced to NCAA Championship Round of 16.”
Charleston enters the weekend with a 2-1 record after losing to UIndy last week. The Golden Eagles are ranked No. 20 nationally by the ITA. Their doubles pairing of Omar Elsamahy and Vincente Garcia holds a No. 10 national ranking.
Alec Foote has coached Charleston since the start of the 2022-23 season. “In his time, he has guided the Golden Eagles to a 58-14 record and three-consecutive appearances in the NCAA National Tournament.”
