The Wayne State University men’s tennis team, ranked No. 18 nationally, will close its regular season with matches against No. 44 Grand Valley State University on April 17 and No. 26 Ferris State University on April 18.
These matches are important as they mark the final opportunities for Wayne State to maintain its strong position in conference play before postseason tournaments begin. The Warriors recently recorded two victories, defeating Purdue Northwest 6-1 and sweeping Roosevelt 7-0. The team is currently undefeated in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) action at 4-0, including three sweeps against Davenport, Michigan Tech, and Roosevelt.
George Day earned GLIAC Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week honors for his performance during last weekend’s wins. Grand Valley State holds a record of nine wins and five losses overall with a home record of five wins and two losses this season. Samantha Barr is in her seventh year as head coach for GVSU’s tennis programs; she was named ITA Midwest Region Men’s Coach of the Year after leading her staff to GLIAC Coaching Staff of the Year honors last season.
Ferris State enters the match ranked No. 26 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), boasting a record of fourteen wins and three losses overall, remaining undefeated both at home (9-0) and in conference play (5-0). Head coach Mark Doren has been named GLIAC Men’s Tennis Coach of the Year three times (2021, 2023, and 2024) after guiding FSU past Wayne State in last year’s NCAA Midwest Regional tournament.
Wayne State continues to hold its No.18 national ranking according to ITA polls. In singles competition, Luis Klaus is ranked No.46 nationally while Klaus teams up with Harry Forsyth as the nation’s No.41-ranked doubles pair.
Wayne State Warriors Men’s Tennis is part of Wayne State University’s intercollegiate athletics program according to the official website.
