Wayne State University announced on Mar. 30 that Kaleb Dawson has been appointed as the new defensive backs coach for the Warriors men’s football team. The decision was made by first-year head football coach Terrence Isaac, Sr.
The appointment of Dawson is significant for Wayne State’s football program, which competes in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference at the NCAA Division II level, according to the official website. The team plays its home games in Detroit and uses green and gold as its colors.
Isaac said, “Kaleb is an experienced coach that has coached in the conference. He’s a great technically sound coach.” Last season, Dawson served as cornerbacks coach and defensive analyst at Saginaw Valley State University, where he helped mentor two Second Team All-GLIAC defensive backs and contributed to his team’s top ranking in total defense during conference play.
Dawson’s playing career included time at Appalachian State from 2018 to 2022 before transferring to Alabama A&M for his final two seasons. He appeared in several bowl games and earned recognition such as being named to the Phil Steele All-SWAC Third Team in 2024 after being selected SWAC Defensive Player of the Week following a standout performance against Mississippi Valley State. In addition to his collegiate achievements, Dawson played high school football at Colquitt County High School in Georgia, where he helped lead his team to a state title game appearance.
The Wayne State Warriors men’s football team finished as national runner-up in NCAA Division II in 2011 according to the official website. The program operates within intercollegiate athletics and continues building on its history of competitive success with this latest coaching addition.
Looking ahead, Wayne State aims to strengthen its defense under Dawson’s guidance while continuing its tradition of athletic achievement.
