Wayne State softball begins six-game road trip with doubleheaders at Purdue Northwest and Roosevelt

The Wayne State University softball team will start a six-game road stretch on April 9 with a doubleheader against Purdue Northwest, followed by matchups at Roosevelt on April 10 and Parkside on April 12.

This series of away games is important for the Warriors as they seek to improve their current record of 12-17 overall and 4-6 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The program participates at the NCAA Division II level, according to the official website. Wayne State competes as a collegiate athletic program based in Detroit, Michigan, as noted by the official website.

Wayne State trails Purdue Northwest in their all-time series, having won only two out of fourteen games played in Hammond. Head coach Nicole Tines is leading the team for her fifth season. Sophomore Elly Koopman currently leads Wayne State with a .343 batting average and nine doubles. Junior Sydney Long has contributed both offensively and defensively, hitting .313 with seven extra-base hits while also leading pitchers with a 3.18 earned run average and recording two shutouts this season.

Purdue Northwest enters these games under first-year head coach Claire Schapker with a record of 19-15 overall and an even split in conference play. Freshman Gracie Jensen tops their batting stats at .404, while senior Hailie Charmat leads pitching efforts with six wins and a 2.27 ERA.

Roosevelt stands at an overall record of 8-24 after splitting its most recent doubleheader against Grand Valley State. Sophomore Kendall Pearson leads Roosevelt’s offense hitting .318 this season under fifth-year head coach Michele Alexander.

After facing Purdue Northwest and Roosevelt back-to-back, Wayne State will have Saturday off before concluding its road trip Sunday against Parkside. The Warriors hold membership in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference according to their official website.
