Wayne State softball falls to Minnesota Duluth at Lewis Dome Invitational

The Wayne State University softball team was defeated 12-0 in five innings by Minnesota Duluth on Friday night at the Lewis Dome Invitational in Rosemont, Illinois. The loss brings Wayne State’s record to 3-2 overall, while Minnesota Duluth improved to 8-4.

Minnesota Duluth started strong with five runs in the first inning, including a three-run home run by Ava Johnson. The Bulldogs added two more runs in the third inning on a triple from Paige Johnson and extended their lead with five additional runs in the fourth. Taylor Dawyduk contributed a two-run pinch-hit double during that inning.

Senior Hayden Batton started for Wayne State, pitching just over three innings and allowing ten earned runs on seven hits and four walks, striking out six batters. Sophomore Elly Koopman finished the game, giving up two earned runs on two hits and two walks while recording two strikeouts.

Minnesota Duluth pitcher Emmie Sylvia-Cochran held Wayne State scoreless over five innings, allowing only four hits and striking out seven without issuing a walk.

Wayne State’s offense included a one-out double by freshman Brooke Bunch in the first inning, a leadoff single from sophomore Abby Barnes in the third, and singles by sophomore Kate DeWitt and senior Maddie Hool in the fourth.

For Minnesota Duluth, Morgan McMillan and Paige Johnson each collected two hits. Both Paige Johnson and Ava Johnson drove in three runs apiece.

Wayne State will continue its participation at the Lewis Dome Invitational with games against Quincy at 3:30 PM Central Time and Winona State at 6 PM Central Time on Saturday.

Wayne State Warriors Women’s Softball is a collegiate athletic program based in Detroit, Michigan. The team competes at the NCAA Division II level as part of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
